ARP – Address Resolution Protocol – A protocol that resolves a IP address to a MAC address.

BGP – Border Gateway Protocol – The main routing protocol of the internet. Builds tables of IP addresses.

DHCP – Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol – A protocol used by networking devices to obtain a IP address. Usually controlled by a server or router.

DNS – Domain Naming System – An internet/intranet service that resolves IP addresses to domain names and vice-versa. eg. 64.233.169.147 is www.google.com.

IGP – Interior Gateway Protocol – A protocol used in a internal network to send/receive updates on networking devices. eg. RIP

IGRP – Interior Gateway Routing Protocol – A routing protocol that uses bandwidth, delay, load, and reliability to determine best the best path.

MAC – Media Access Control – The “burned in” or physical address of a networking device. This address is unique.

NIC – Network Interface Card – The network card or adapter found in computers or networking devices to access a network.

RAM – Random Access Memory – A type of memory that only store information when the computer of device is powered on.

RARP – Reverse Address Resolution Protocol – A protocol that resolves a MAC address to a IP address.

RIP – Routing Information Protocol – A routing protocol that uses hops for its metric. 15 Hops Max.

ROM – Read Only Memory – A type of memory that can only be read. eg. BIOS of a computer.

STP – Spanning Tree Protocol – A protocol used by switches in a mesh topology that prevents network loops.
